Twice a year, St. James’ holds a Day of Community Service where there is only one service and parishioners go out and serve in local outreach efforts. With the partnership St. James’ has with the Auburn Rescue Mission, we have an opportunity to engage the tenants of the Merriman Circle neighborhood in Auburn.  The tenants have recently come out of homelessness and are living in the Merriman new housing community.  There are opportunities to serve meals, interact with children including reading, game playing or crafts. Sharing God’s love with people who truly could use the hope makes all of our volunteers’ hearts full.

 

For 50 years, the Women of St. James’ have staffed the St. James’ Thrift Shop in Skaneateles Village and helped the community in many ways. Local families with limited resources can find goods and clothing at low prices. Money earned from the sale of consigned and donated items supports charitable causes. Families in crisis receive free household goods and clothing. The Thrift Shop is located in the basement of the Masonic Temple on Genesee Street between State and Jordan streets. The hours are 10 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The store’s phone number is 685-5060. Please stop by, shop, and support the Women of St. James’ and their ministry.

 

In 2001, seven local churches – First Presbyterian, Grace Chapel, Holy Trinity Lutheran, St. Andrews United Methodist, St. James’ Episcopal, St. Mary’s of the Lake Roman Catholic, and Skaneateles United Methodist – combined their food programs into one ecumenical food pantry to collect and distribute food to the needy of the Skaneateles area. The Pantry serves approximately 100 households each month, and provides special holiday distributions at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. The people of St. James’ provide weekly food donations, as well as volunteers who serve at the Pantry and on its board of directors.

Cayuga County Habitat for Humanity provides low income housing for needy families in the Auburn area. Volunteers are always welcome to work on these homes. For more information, contact Kip Coerper at

CreationCARE is the environmental ministry of St. James’ Episcopal Church, located in Skaneateles, New York. Founded on the belief that we have a moral responsibility to be stewards of God’s Creation, CreationCARE is dedicated to fostering ecological practices that will lessen our impact on the earth. Through prayer, discussion, education and action, members of CreationCARE seek ways to create an earth-friendly environment within their personal lives, their communities, and the world. Members serve our present and future generations by engaging in conservation, education, and habitat improvement projects. We are eager for all people who are interested in improving the environment to participate in our meetings and activities.

Teams of two visit the men and women at the Cayuga county Jail located on County House Road in Auburn. They offer prayer, song, support, devotionals, and study of the Bible. The goal in visiting the incarcerated men and women is to offer the presence of Christ to them. Currently St. James’ is seeking more volunteers willing to visit the men at the jail and others to serve as a pen pal.   Soup Kitchen at SS Peter and John in Auburn This soup kitchen feeds as many as 150 of our hungry neighbors every Saturday, 52 weeks a year.  St. James’ sends volunteers on the last Saturday of the month.  Some work from 9:30 am to 11:30 am preparing food while others work from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm serving and cleaning up.  All you need to help is a willingness to work and smile!
